Heating designed around how schools actually use buildings

Schools share a tough heating brief: very irregular occupancy, peak demand at exactly the time of day when energy is most expensive, and a duty of care to keep children safe around heating equipment. Classroom radiators take up the wall space that should be used for displays and storage, and they often arrive at temperature long after the first lesson has started.

PowerBoard ceiling panels solve all three. Each classroom runs on its own thermostat and schedule, with fast warm-up timed for the start of each lesson. Walls stay clear for displays, the heating cannot be touched at child height, and there is no fan noise to compete with the teacher's voice.

For school halls, gyms and dining halls, larger 750W panels deliver fast comfort for assemblies, PE and lunch services without trying to heat the building constantly.

Why infrared is well-suited to UK schools

Silent throughout the lesson

No fan noise, no radiator clicking, no boiler thrum. Teachers can be heard from the back of the classroom without raising their voice.

Child-safe by design

Ceiling-mounted out of reach. No hot radiator faces, no exposed pipework. The risk profile compared to a wet system at child height is dramatically lower.

On for the lesson, off for the gap

Fast warm-up means the heating runs lesson-by-lesson, not all day. Empty classrooms drop to setback automatically.

Walls stay clear for displays

No radiators eating into useful wall space. Whole walls become available for displays, storage, whiteboards and pinboards.

Per-room control

Each classroom, hall, library and office has its own thermostat. South-facing rooms do not have to be the same as north-facing ones.

Term-time scheduling

Smart thermostats handle term dates, INSET days, holidays and after-school clubs without manual override. The site team see everything from one dashboard.

Benefits of PowerBoard in your school

Lower energy bills, especially out of term

Schools with PowerBoard typically see 40-60% reduction over gas, with most of the saving coming from no longer "ticking over" through holidays and weekends.

Safer than wet radiator systems

No hot radiator faces at child height, no scalding pipework, no leaks into electrical sockets. Ceiling-mounted heating is fundamentally safer for primary settings.

Better learning environment

Studies link cold classrooms to lower attainment scores. Stable 20-21°C radiant comfort holds across the lesson without the "too hot, too cold" cycle of a wet system.

Easier compliance with DfE BB101 ventilation

Because radiant heating does not require recirculated air, classrooms can be ventilated for CO₂ and air quality without major heating losses.

Phased installation across school holidays

Most schools install zone-by-zone over October half-term, Christmas and Easter breaks. No need for a single big shutdown.

No annual gas safety, no boiler replacement

Predictable site costs, no surprise boiler failure mid-term, no annual CP12 rota across multiple plant rooms.

What's the right specification for your school?

School heating loads vary by classroom size, ceiling height, glazing, and number of pupils. Typical starting specs:

Standard classroom (45-55m², 28-30 pupils)

School hall / gym / dining hall (180-300m²)

Your questions, answered

Are infrared panels safe in primary classrooms?

Yes, and they are typically safer than wet radiator systems. Panels mount at ceiling level, well out of reach, with no exposed hot surfaces or pipework at child height. PowerBoard is BEAB certified for use in commercial and educational settings.

How disruptive is installation in a working school?

Most school installs are phased across school holidays, classroom-by-classroom. October half-term typically covers a teaching block; full school sites are usually completed over a Christmas break or summer holiday.

What about CO₂ and ventilation requirements (BB101)?

Because PowerBoard is radiant rather than convective, opening windows for CO₂ control does not collapse the heating system the way it does with warm-air. Radiant warmth onto pupils continues even with the window cracked open.

Can we keep our existing gas boiler for the hot water and showers?

Yes. Many schools transition heating to PowerBoard while keeping gas for kitchen and changing-room hot water, then transition that separately later. The two systems do not interfere.

Will it integrate with our building management system?

Yes. Smart thermostats can integrate with school BMS via standard protocols, so caretakers see everything in one dashboard alongside lighting, alarms and access control.
