Why gyms are switching from gas warm-air to infrared

Gyms are hard to heat well. High ceilings, constant door openings to changing rooms and reception, and members who go from cold arrival to full exertion in minutes, conventional gas warm-air systems simply cannot respond fast enough. They run all day to maintain temperature, blow dust and chalk around the floor, and still leave members cold at the squat rack at 6am.

PowerBoard infrared panels work completely differently. Mounted overhead, they radiate heat directly onto the floor and the people on it, not the air. The weights room is at temperature in under 10 minutes of switching on. There is no fan noise competing with the sound system. There is no air movement stirring up chalk dust at the barbell station. And because each zone has its own thermostat, the free weights floor, the functional training area, the spin room and the changing rooms all run independently at their own setpoints.

Why infrared suits every part of your gym

Weights room ready fast

No all-day pre-heating. Switch on a few minutes before opening and the free weights floor is at setpoint before the first member arrives.

No fan noise over the music

Infrared panels are completely silent. Your sound system is not competing with a gas warm-air unit blowing from the ceiling.

No chalk or dust blown around

Radiant heat does not move air. Chalk stays at the barbell station. Dust stays on the floor. Better for members with asthma or allergies.

Zone control per training area

Free weights, functional rig, HIIT studio, spin room and changing rooms each run on their own thermostat. No one area overheats while another stays cold.

Compensates for door openings

Radiant heat warms people and surfaces, not air. When the entrance door opens, members on the floor stay comfortable because the warmth is not lost with the air.

Opening-hours scheduling

Smart thermostats pre-heat before opening, hold setpoint during trading hours, and drop to setback automatically overnight and on rest days.

Benefits of PowerBoard in your gym

Members comfortable from their first set

No one spends the first 20 minutes of a session waiting for the room to warm up. Radiant heat is immediate at floor level.

Lower energy bills than gas warm-air

Most commercial gyms cut heating energy 40-60% by stopping all-day pre-heating and using fast-response radiant panels only during opening hours.

No plant room or boiler space needed

Reclaim the utility cupboard. PowerBoard mounts entirely overhead with no boiler, no flue, no annual gas safety certificate.

Safe above equipment and rigs

BEAB-certified panels with low surface temperature. Safe to mount above pull-up rigs, cable machines, and functional training frames at correct clearance heights.

Independent zone control

Run the spin room at 18°C, the CrossFit box at 17°C, and the free weights area at 19°C simultaneously. Each zone responds to its own occupancy and class schedule.

Predictable maintenance costs

No annual boiler service, no warm-air filter changes, no fan-belt replacements. PowerBoard has no moving parts and a 10-year warranty.

What specification does your gym need?

Panel counts depend on ceiling height, zone size and the type of training. HIIT and CrossFit generate more body heat, so need fewer panels than a quiet free weights floor.

Free weights / functional training floor (80-150m²)

HIIT studio / CrossFit box (60-120m²)

Your questions, answered

Can infrared heat a large open-plan gym floor?

Yes. High-output 750W panels cover larger zones from greater ceiling heights, while 250W panels are ideal for standard 3-4m ceilings. A typical 100m² free weights floor needs around 28 × 250W panels.

Is it safe to mount panels above weightlifting equipment?

Yes. PowerBoard panels are BEAB certified with low surface temperature emission. They are designed to be mounted above rigs, cable machines and barbells at standard clearance heights. We provide a layout drawing with every install.

Will it cope with members constantly opening the entrance door?

Better than warm-air will. Radiant heat warms people and the floor directly, so when cold air enters through the door it only temporarily affects the air temperature, members on the floor feel comfortable because the radiant warmth is still there.

Can spin rooms use the same system?

Yes. Spin rooms typically run at 17-19°C and rely on the class to generate most of the heat. PowerBoard smart thermostats back off automatically as body heat builds, making it very efficient for high-intensity classes.

How do we control different zones independently?

Each zone gets its own smart thermostat with its own schedule. Free weights, HIIT studio, spin and changing rooms can all run at different temperatures and different times from the same app dashboard.
